We will be using calculators in class the second half of the year. This will shift our focus from basic arithmetic functions to real world concepts and application. However, CALCULATORS ARE FOR SCRATCH WORK ONLY. Students must still write down and label the numbers they are using to solve each problem to earn credit for their work. Writing an answer only will result in a 0 on homework assignments and test questions. I need to see the numbers each student is entering into their calculator to ensure they are following the correct steps and mastering the concepts.
I have included two examples of "showing your work" below. In both examples, I have labeled each part of the problem and written down the numbers I am going to enter into my calculator. Because fingers can slip when entering numbers into a calculator, showing the correct work for the concept will earn half credit. Full credit is given for showing work and obtaining the correct answer. Students are encouraged to pay very careful attention to what they are entering into their calculator, check their work, and ask themselves "Does my answer make sense?". If you are interested in purchasing a calculator for at-home use, please see the list of recommended calculators on the class home page.
